If your PC came pre-installed with Windows 10, your PC likely has a weird computer name. As you likely know, one can view computer name by right-clicking on This PC (Computer icon) on desktop or File Explorer and then clicking Properties.
It’s important to set a unique name for your computer, especially if your computer is part of a network or if you often need to connect your PC to a network. If there are multiple computers with the same name in a network, you might encounter issues while connecting your PC to the network.
Renaming or changing computer name in Windows 10 is fairly easy as you can use both Settings app and old Control Panel to change your Windows 10 computer name. In this guide, we will see how to rename your Windows 10 computer.
Following are the two ways to easily change computer name in Windows 10.
Method 1 of 2
Change Windows 10 computer name via Settings
Step 1: Open Start menu, click Settings icon to open Settings app.

Step 2: At the home page of Settings app, click System icon.
Step 3: Click About to see various information about your PC and Windows 10, including the current name of your PC.
Step 4: Click the Rename PC button to launch Rename your PC dialog.
Step 5: Type a new name for your Windows 10 PC and then click Next button.
Please note that Windows 10 doesn’t allow you use spaces and certain special characters when renaming your Windows 10 PC. For instance, you can’t set Into Windows as PC’s name however you can set IntoWindows (without space).
Once done, you will see the following dialog with Restart now and Restart later buttons. Restart your PC now or later to set the new name as your Windows 10 computer name.
Method 2 of 2
Rename Windows 10 PC via Control Panel
In addition to above mentioned method, you can use the classic Control Panel method to change your Windows 10 computer name. Here is how to use Control Panel to rename your Windows 10 PC.
Step 1: Type Sysdm.cpl in Start menu or Run command box and then press Enter key to open System Properties.
Step 2: Here, under Computer Name tab, click the Change button to open Computer Name/Domain Changes dialog.
Step 3: Enter a new name for your PC in the Computer name field and then click OK button.
You will see the following dialog with “You must restart your computer to apply these changes” message.
Please restart your PC to set the new name as your Windows 10 computer name. That’s it!
